Moon and planets reward steadiness and useful magnification. Galaxies and nebulae reward aperture and dark sky. Wide star fields reward short focal length and low power.

Know the three common designs
Refractors are simple and quick. Newtonian reflectors put more aperture on a basic mount. Catadioptrics are compact for their focal length but add cool-down, alignment, and mounting demands.
