Start with the observing job

Moon and planets reward steadiness and useful magnification. Galaxies and nebulae reward aperture and dark sky. Wide star fields reward short focal length and low power.

  • Deep sky: aperture before electronics
  • Mixed use: simplicity before specialization
Know the three common designs

Refractors are simple and quick. Newtonian reflectors put more aperture on a basic mount. Catadioptrics are compact for their focal length but add cool-down, alignment, and mounting demands.

  • Dobsonian: maximum visual aperture
  • Catadioptric: compact tube, narrower field
Test the ownership experience

Measure the storage path, assembled weight, doorway width, vehicle space, and setup time. Visit an astronomy club and use several designs before spending heavily.
