Plan the month, then check the night

Best months for stargazing

Use twenty years of regional nighttime cloud and local astronomical-darkness geometry to choose a season. Then narrow the trip with moonless dates and a live forecast.

Use the layers in order

Climate chooses the month. The Moon and forecast choose the night.

01 · Season

Start with historical opportunity

Each location page counts nights with at least three hours of astronomical darkness and regional nighttime cloud at or below 30%. The range shows how much years differ.

02 · Geometry

Protect the darkest hours

After choosing a month, place the trip near a moonless window. High-latitude pages also identify months when the Sun never reaches astronomical darkness.

Make the final call close to departure

The climate baseline is not a campsite forecast. Check the live hourly outlook and the site operator's access guidance before travelling.

What the baseline can answer

Where does a trip have more usable nights in a typical month?

GoodSeeing combines the NASA POWER CERES SYN1deg nighttime-cloud record for 2005–2024 with astronomical darkness and lunar geometry calculated for each location. It reports averages and the middle half of years so one unusually clear season does not masquerade as certainty.

The cloud grid is roughly one degree wide. It cannot resolve a ridge, valley fog pocket, smoke event, local light dome, road closure or the sky on a particular date. It does not measure atmospheric steadiness.
