When telescope optics dew up and how to stop it
Dew forms when an exposed optical surface cools below the air’s dew point. Treat a narrowing temperature–dew-point gap as a warning: fit a shield early, then add only enough controlled heat to keep the glass dry.
Relative humidity is not the trigger by itself. The National Weather Service defines dew point as the temperature at which air becomes saturated and water begins to condense. A forecast can still show air temperature above the dew point while an exposed lens or corrector radiates heat toward the night sky and cools below it. That is why there is no universal humidity cutoff for telescope dew.
Plan in layers. Fit a dew shield before the optics fog; it reduces the surface’s exposure to the open sky and slows radiative heat loss. On a long, humid session, a shield may not be enough. Add a controller and heater made for the optical design, using gentle heat to keep the glass just above the dew point rather than making the telescope warm.
Watch the most exposed parts first: corrector plates, refractor objectives, finder lenses, eyepieces and camera windows. Keep unused eyepieces capped and avoid breathing across cold glass. A dimming view, soft halos around bright stars or a wet sheen under a red light means condensation has already started.
If an optic becomes wet, stop observing instead of wiping the coating. Let the moisture evaporate in clean, dry air, using only gentle indirect warmth allowed by the manufacturer. At pack-up, do not cap the telescope or close it in an airtight case until every optical, electrical and mechanical surface is dry.
Use a forecast as a preparation signal, not a promise. Falling temperature, humid air, a small temperature–dew-point spread, a long session and an unobstructed clear sky all justify packing dew control. The optic can cool below the reported air temperature, so conditions at the glass still decide whether dew forms.
