How wind affects telescope stability and imaging
There is no universal wind cutoff. Use the forecast as a risk signal, then let your own setup decide: if the target shakes at the eyepiece or stars elongate in test exposures, lower or shelter the rig, shorten exposures or pack up.
Wind can spoil a view in two different ways. Airflow across the site can accompany atmospheric turbulence, while pressure on the optical tube, camera, tripod or pier can physically shake the instrument. GoodSeeing uses forecast surface wind only as a cautious proxy for seeing; it cannot predict how a particular rig will respond to a gust.
Read the label before comparing forecasts. The US National Weather Service defines sustained wind from a two-minute average, while its forecast gust is the maximum three-second speed expected within a two-minute interval at 10 metres. A single hourly wind value therefore cannot promise that the air between those samples will be smooth, and GoodSeeing does not display a separate gust forecast.
There is no responsible universal cutoff for observing or imaging. Wind load changes with the exposed area and orientation of the tube, the height and stiffness of the support, the ground, the enclosure and the required image scale. Professional facilities use equipment-specific rules: Kitt Peak notes that an individual telescope can be more restrictive than its site-wide closing limit, while ESO publishes separate restrictions for different La Silla telescope types. Those are evidence that limits belong to the system, not numbers to borrow for a portable rig.
Test the setup at the job you intend to do. For visual observing, center a bright target at the planned magnification, release the controls and watch whether it stays still. For imaging, take a brief series of validation exposures at the intended focal length and planned duration, then inspect stars for repeated directional elongation. Lower a short tube when its manual permits, retract unnecessary tripod height, shorten exposures or move behind solid existing shelter; never add loose fabric that can become a sail.
Recheck after a change in wind direction or a stronger gust. Pack up if the tube is being pushed, the tripod shifts, cables or covers will not stay controlled, or dust is blowing onto exposed optics. A forecast can help you choose the calmer hour, but a stable image and a setup that stays secure while you are beside it are the only useful pass tests at the telescope.
